Joan Jett is an influential, trailblazing musician, who has broken down rock’s gender barriers and helped pioneer punk music when she penned “Cherry Bomb” at 15 years old on the Runaways’ (Jett's first band) debut LP. Since then Joan Jett has always been in the forefront of women in rock, earning her the moniker Queen of Rock 'n' Roll and the Godmother of Punk.
After the Runaways disbanded, Jett formed the Blackhearts with her new bandmates, which included Gary Ryan, Lee Crystal and Ricky Byrd. One of The Blackhearts' biggest hits is their version of the song "I Love Rock 'n Roll" which hit the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks in 1982. Joan Jett's other notable hit songs include "Bad Reputation", "Crimson and Clover", "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)", "Light of Day", "I Hate Myself for Loving You" and "Dirty Deeds".
Joan Jett is also at the helm of her independent record label, Blackheart, which was founded in 1980 after she was rejected by no less than 23 labels. Blackheart is one of the longest running indie labels and continues to give voice to new bands to this day.
Jett has a whopping eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles to her name, and an inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. With all her career achievements and being an icon of inspiration, the New York Post lauds her as "one of the first, and still the hardest-rocking, woman."
